My name is Jericho. My roots are in northern Alberta, specifically in the Metis Settlements of Peavine and Gift Lake. In these communities I learned of cultural activities such as: hunting and trapping, fishing, camping, medicinal plants, Red River Jig, and stewardship of the earth. While my family did not participate in the spiritual practices of my Indigenous background, I was aware of them as other people in my community did.
In early 2020 I moved to Winnipeg to live with my cousins, whom we consider each other siblings, and the world shut down. I found work a few months later at a faith-based nonprofit in the North End, Inner City Youth Alive, delivering hampers to the 100+ families they were connected with. Once the world opened up again, Inner City Youth Alive hired me as a Finance Assistant. I learned a lot as I worked directly with the Director of Finance; about accounting, office managing, and about life in the North End.
I first heard about Candace House through my cousin, who worked closely with families coming through Candace House. I decided to apply, since I had heard only good things about the work and staff here. During the interview, Cecilly and Taylor also shared how they value taking care of staff while being so deeply involved in the lives of families going through tragedy. The uniqueness, values, and mission of Candace House as well as the care and development of staff drew me to this job, and I am glad to help out in any way that I can.
